79. Farewell to Lisbon

After four weeks of living in this exciting sophisticated city, time has come for me to bit farewell and move on to my next destination ...

Here are a few impressions gathered during my stay ...

Lisbon is a city of fine monuments mostly dedicated to its courageous seamen from past centuries ...

... wonderful patisseries ...

... endless narrow laneways ...

... fine public architecture ...

... impressive churches ...

... with stunning interiors ...

... I wasn't the only Aussie visitor ...

... red tiled roofs stretching for miles ...

... Lisbon is a city of trams ...

... modern and efficient ...

... old and quaint ...

... loved by the tourists - but hated by the local motorists ...

... you can always catch a Tuk Tuk ...

... or hop on/off bus ...

... and a wonderful Metro and suburban train system ...

... it's a city of hills ...

... and endless steps ...

... but the rewards of long walks are always pretty good ...

... then there's the ports - 1900 vintage selling for around A$3000 ...

... Lisbon is a city of tiled facades - both modern -

... and not so modern ...

... Christmas carols in the city centre ...

... and packed churches on Christmas eve ...

... and have I mentioned the Portuguese Christmas cakes ??? ...

... and good old Aussie gum trees ...
Originally bought to Portugal to grow for wood-chip,
but now slightly out of control and considered a pest by some ...

... a sea of red tiles ...

... and endless limestone pavers ...

... Lisbon rests beside the Tagus River ...

...  with fine bridges ...

... and ferry services of all descriptions connecting the city with the suburbs ...

... all the time over-looked and protected by the towering Cristo Rei ...

... it was Christmas time after all !!! ...

... lots of interesting flea and antiques markets - very tempting but I resisted  ...

... not all the fine art was in museums ...

... lots of talented street artists ...

... sunny laneways ...

... more fine monuments to the brave Portuguese explorers ...

... detail ...

... and the stunning view of Lisbon Zoo from my apartment ...

... and I just had to have that final hot chocolate and best-ever choc cake before leaving ...

I loved my stay in this city - and was kinda sad to have to say adeus ... but my time there had run out - so with bags packed and airline ticket in hand, I set off on the next step of this wonderful adventure - and this takes me to another continent to explore a totally different culture ... stay tuned
