222. Contemporary Serbian Art @ Zepter Museum

In the 1920s Belgrade - as the capital of the newly formed Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes - got a number of important buildings designed in different architectural styles of that era. This magnificent edifice - designed by the Croatian architect Dionis Andrija Sunko - was built for the First Croatian Savings Bank.

The building was commissioned for a twofold purpose: the bank occupied the ground and first floors and the remaining three upper storeys were designed as different sized residential flats. The main façade was modelled after multifunctional buildings of the Berlin Secession and is one of rare examples of Berlin and Hungarian Secession in Belgrade.

The Bank occupied the building for several decades before closing its doors. The gallery then moved in and opened  on July 1, 2010 – when the founder of the Museum - and its owner - Mrs. Madlena Zepter - presented her native city with this cultural institution.

The core activity of the Museum is “… to collect systematically, protect, study, exhibit and publish works of art. It is intended to gather together in one place the works and artists who can visualize the complex art scene in Serbia in the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the new millennium ...”

It was a delight for me to spend a couple of hours in this beautiful and important gallery – and I share with you just a fraction of the artworks that thrilled my senses ...
