I
guess we associate the Tulip primarily with the Netherlands, but it is
interesting to research that the wild Tulips’ centre of diversity is in the
Pamir, Hindu Kush, and Tien Shan mountains. Its range extends west to the
Iberian Peninsula, through North Africa to Greece, the Balkans, Turkey,
throughout the Levant (Syria, Israel, Palestinian Territories, Lebanon, Jordan)
and Iran, north to Ukraine, southern Siberia and Mongolia, and east to the
Northwest of China. It is of course a bulbous plant belonging to the lily
family and there are around 75 wild species - here is just a glimpse of a few of the cultivated species on show in Sofia.

It’s
a special treat for me to be here in Sofia to see this wonderful display of
colour – I shouldn’t imagine the flowers last long – so it will be interesting
to see what blooms fill the gardens in summer when the weather heats up … might have to come back later in the year to check it out …
