71. Museo del Chiado
take you on a visit to the Museo del Chiado – The National Museum of Contemporary Art. This collection of fine
art was started in 1911 and then in 1994 opened in its current location, a
renovated part of the old Convent of São Francisco (Saint Francis), a building
of mediaeval origins.
The museum covers the period from 1850 to present day, with works by foremost
Portuguese artists of the period. It is reputed to hold the best collection of
Portuguese painting and sculpture from the Romanticism, Naturalism and Modern
periods, and going on what I viewed today, I think the reputation is well
The Farewell - Antonio Jose Patricio - oils - 1858
Eva - Tomas Costa - marble - 1891
Love and Psyche - Jose Veloso Salgado - oils - 1891
Today is Sunday and admission to the museum is free in
the morning but even so I have the museum to all myself most of the time – bliss – apart of course from the ever
present gallery guards who, for want of
something better to do, followed me from chamber to chamber !!!
