277. 20th Century art at the Gallerie Italia

Milan can boast over 70 art galleries and art museums - one of my main reasons for coming here - but I will need longer than two short weeks to seek out just a fraction of them ... maybe in my next lifetime I can return as a Milanese and spend my days gallery hopping ... !!! ...

One of the leading Milan galleries is the fabulous Gallerie di Piazza Scala  - or better known as Gallerie Italia. Now before I go any further, I just have to say that in my travels I have visited literally hundreds of art galleries both in the US Europe and Oz, but this stunning venue would have to rank as one of the most beautiful gallery experiences I have ever had. Everything about the gallery was absolutely top drawer - from the minute you walk in the front door - the charming attentive staff, the amazing decor, the professional curating and of course, most importantly, the stunning works of art. High praise indeed ...

The Galleries of Piazza Scala – covering an area of over 8,000 sq meters - are housed in an architectural complex that is composed of palaces, courtyards and gardens designed by Italy’s leading architects of the late eighteenth and early twentieth centuries and is located in the very heart of Milan opposite La Scala Opera House..

Palazzo Anguissola Antona Traversi and Palazzo Brentani built in 1775 and 1778, plus the original building for the Banca Commerciale Italiana built between 1906 and 1911, together house a selection of works of the 19th and  20th centuries from the Intesa Sanpaolo collection ( 195 artworks )  and the Cariplo Foundation ( 189 artworks ).

much of the original banking chamber fixtures have been preserved ...
