Tales of the City

The latest artwork to find its way out of my studio is a special edition of six pieces for the up-coming Editions Sunshine Coast Exhibition opening at the Old Ambulance Station Galleries in Nambour ( Qld - Australia ) on 23 April and running until 29 May 2021.

I've titled this set - " Tales of the City " - ( with apologies to Amistead Maupin ).

  

The Editions exhibition - curated by myself and Sandy Doble - will feature 28 invited artists from Wide Bay to Melbourne - each having been invited to submit 6 pieces that have a major component of artist-printed material. 

My theme was to build a set of tiny abstract house-like structures and wallpaper them with paper that I have printed, and in character with the architectural theme I have used building material as my printing blocks.

The first block is a small piece of woven raffia cane.

... next is the reverse side of a ceramic floor tile ...

... and the third block material are pieces of timber ... each block is inked up and the paper is laid on top and pressed down onto the block ...

... The resultant images are quite interesting.

 

 

... and when applied to the wooden structure then painted with golden shellac, give an interesting architectural effect.

The major piece is  40 x 40 x 40 cms

As with all my artworks over the past 15 or so years, I feature tiny scrolls symbolizing stories ( tales ) that are rolled up and tied with string ... urging the viewer to use their imagination as to what those stories may be ...

Keeping company with the major piece are five smaller "cities".

 

So there you have it - " Tales of the City " by Ken Munsie.

 

The Editions Sunshine Coast exhibition opens at the Old Ambulance Stations Galleries at 80 Howard Street - Nambour on 23 April - and will be open 7 days 10am to 4pm until 29 May.
