149. ... Modern Art and Bamboo

Rome is not all churches and ancient ruins - there is also a thriving modern art scene in the city, and one of the leading lights is the Museum of Contemporary Art - also known as MACRO.

The Museum is housed in two separate places - at either end of the city. One is a former brewery in the Salario quarter ( a middle class residential area ... ) and the other in a former slaughterhouse in the Tessacio quarter ( an area better known for its more seedy night clubs ... ).

MACRO Salario

An interesting exhibition of " geometric abstraction " from the past 60 years ...

... the stockyards are now used by artists and students
as creative and leisure spaces ...

then for the star attraction at the Museum ...
towering 33m over the complex
and seen for miles around the suburb ...

Big Bambu - Mike and Doug Starn - USA - 2014

after signing a release form and taking a deep breath
it was into the artwork and upwards ...

bamboo steps and platforms ease their way
up to the top viewing platform ...

peace messages fluttering in the breeze ...

33m up and enjoying the view
I was joined by the two janitors and their brooms ...
not that there was much dust up there ... !!!

the structure is held together by colourful nylon cord ...

100 feet is a long way up
when all you've got underneath you are bamboo poles ... !!!

looking out over the city and a rather scarey impending thunderstorm

by this stage a strong wind had started and it was definitely time
to get down to ground level and take shelter ...

As the storm rolled in there was just time for one last photograph, then it was inside the Museum for half an hour of heavy rain and wind ...
